Project Runway! "Blue is a hard challenge."

Blue is a hard challenge? Really? Not to over echo the fellows over at TLo, but this may be the easiest challenge ever in the history of reality competition television. Make a marketable outfit in blue for Macy's. Sure, they had to work in pairs, and that can get a bit tricky. But the challenge itself difficult, no. Blue is probably the most accessible, most popular color of the rainbow. It's not my favorite color; I'm more of a red girl. However, most people can wear any shade of blue and look great, especially that turquoise, teal color. I wear turquoise quite a bit.

With that information, how surprising is it that these are the two garments from the winning pair, Irina and Gordana. Pretty, functional, kind of boring clothes. I like the top that Gordana made, above, but the dress especially has been done and done. Very little innovation here. Very little fresh designing. I realize that they can't exactly go crazy on a Macy's Inc. challenge, but. . .

On the other hand, I'm sorry to see Louise Black go home. Louise is a great designer. Check out her unbelievable corsets in her etsy shop. They are little works of art, each and every one of them. It seems that maybe her brand of creativity is not exactly what Project Runway is looking for. She so reminded me of how I would most likely react if I were on a show like this. As I've said before, I cannot imagine the pressure and the creative exhaustion that you must feel after being there for a few weeks. This dress is not cute, and Michael Kors hit it on the head when he said that it looked like it had shower loofahs sewn on the front of it. Yet, at least she did something interesting and unusual. I have no doubt that Louise will be a great fashion success.
Now, I have an alternate Macy's challenge idea: Make a garment based on a balloon from the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. I would so pick the Cat in the Hat. Remember that year when it was really windy and the Cat in the Hat got loose from his handlers and went maurading through the streets, knocking people over? There's a great dress to be had in that.

  1. This episode made me so angry! The pair that got the middle ground at that start had TERRIBLE outfits. I winced when I saw them, especially with the riding up skirt. Ugh!

The winning outfits were okay. Just okay.

And I loved that shirt-dress. I would buy it up in a snap. Tim Gunn loved it! I wish Tim was a judge... And the other dress they did I thought was pretty neat. The neck was a little weird, but the whole thing was funky and fashion-forward. Or so I thought. Sigh.

  2. ha! I also noted that silly comment about the difficulty of designing around blue while watching this past week.

glad to see that i'm not the only one who thought the shirtdress wasn't that tragic. it didn't read as shiny on my tv, but perhaps I'd have a different opinion were I to see it up close...
