Project Runway, avant garde surf?

I am utterly perplexed by last night's Project Runway episode. It began as a surf-inspired challenge, so you immediately think of hoodies, bathing suits, wet suits and flip-flops, right? Something swimmy and casual and beachy. Nah, it translated to dresses, surf dresses, made of organza. Dry clean only organza. I live in Ohio, and we don't surf much here, but whaaaaaa?

Then, the designers were paired up, and that always causes people to go hyper-wacky. They only had fifteen minutes to shop. I would burst into tears and break out in hives and end up with a handful of mismatched buttons and peacock feathers.

So, halfway through, Tim announced that they would have to create a corresponding avant garde look. Avant garde surf clothing? Like Gidget + a jellyfish = avant garde surf? Huh? I'm not sure what they were supposed to create, so maybe that's why I absolutely do not understand who won or why. Is this cute? I don't think this is cute. Nor does it look surf or avant garde. It is made of neoprene, but it kinda looks like a brussel sprout with a misplaced bustle.

On the other hand, I can applaud the elimination of the exhausted little fellow who couldn't sew or come up with designs or deal with the fact that he was on television. Nice guy, wrong place for him. He wasn't even too good with an iron.

Avant garde surf. . . Hmmmm. . . I feel a MAB necklace coming on involving lobster claws, Gobstoppers and watch springs.

  1. Just finished watching this episode. Don't worry, it confused me too. The judging seemed very cut down for time and jumped all over the place. And that neoprene dress? Ugh. I hated it, really thought the judges would too. Guess I'm not fashion forward enough. Haha.

Although, the "avant garde" outfit with the garters they said was too sexy, I really, really liked it.

  2. At least the lacy garter thing looked well made following some sort of plan. The neoprene outfit looked sorta stapled together and weird? If it looks like I could have made it, that's usually bad. But the dude did make the whole shebang in an hour, so you have to give him credit.

  3. I also didn't get the neoprene dress. But I guess I thought that he deserved to win based on the fact that he did everything himself! I don't even know how the other guy got on Project Runway!
