MAB? Why?

"Why MAB?"

I've been asked this question a lot. It's more complicated than you might think.

Take a look at this picture. That's Mary Astor with Humphrey Bogart in The Maltese Falcon. See the unusual Bathrobe that Mary is wearing there? MAB stands for Mary Astor's Bathrobe.

Let me tell you the full story:

My mom has seen 98% of all of the movies filmed before 1950. She also has a keen eye for what is worn in what movie and who designed it. In addition, she will call me up suddenly and say things like, "Turn over to Channel 7 and look at Kelly Clarkson's butt!" All of these endearing Mom oddities and tendencies came together in cleansing synchronicity to give us the name MAB.

She called suddenly one evening, and said, "Turn over to TMC (Turner Classic Movies) and look at that bathrobe that Gene Tierney is wearing."

"That's a very nice bathrobe, Ma," I replied.
"No, that's the same bathrobe that Mary Astor wore in The Maltese Falcon!"

"Ooookay."

"No, she's wearing Mary Astor's bathrobe!!"

So, six years ago, when we were trying to come up with a name for our fledgling jewelry business, Mom suggested MAB Jewelry. And here I am today. I love MAB. It's short, memorable and started with my mom. It has its roots in old movies, and it makes for a great story.

She also came up with the motto, "No naked wrists." Mom missed her calling. The lady is a marketing genius. Ah, my ma. . .
