The fleeting nature of blogs

I've been following way too many blogs, and then I feel guilty when I skip over too many of them too often and don't leave comments. So, yesterday, I decided to go through and weed out some of the ones that hadn't posted in awhile. More than a third of the blogs that I follow hadn't posted in more than three months. This surprised me. Although I sometimes don't have much time to hang out here, I don't think I could give it up completely at this point. So why do so many die?
Here's my theory. Most people aren't used to writing down their thoughts, or they start a blog thinking that they'll just write about what they're making or selling. I couldn't write about jewelry and Etsy every day. I love making jewelry, but, frankly, there's not much to write about, certainly not on a daily basis. Every once in awhile, I like to post some stuff I've made lately, but I would bore myself to dang death if I did that every day.
Some days, there's nothing to write about, so you get Fun with Graphs or other silly stuff. You know what? We all need silly stuff to keep on going. And thank goodness for the cats, because they give me lots of editorial content and images. Bless their little feline hearts.
But I think it comes down to this. You either enjoy writing your blog or you don't. And I really enjoy it. I have a creative writing background, so it's pretty easy sit down and type some thoughts, but I don't even think it takes that. It's just another magical way that the internet allows us to connect with other people all over the world. And when you all leave me comments, it makes me so happy. Writing a blog post isn't work to me, just like making jewelry isn't work. I enjoy doing both, or I would stop. And I enjoy reading blogs, because it's cool to see what others are thinking or doing out there.
Thanks, loyal readers, for putting up with my babbling yet again. And if you're one of those people whose blog died, I understand. I hate cooking, so I only do that when I absolutely have to.

  1. You funny girl :)

I always have a giggle whatever you post :)

We must be getting the same "ESPN" 'coz I sent an email to someone yesterday saying the same thing, that a 3rd of the blogs I follow haven't posted in 2 months.

I think it has something to do with instant gratification. People start blogs a lot of the time because they want lots of followers or they have just watched "Julie and Julia"

I do spend way too much time reading others blogs and commenting but I love all the connections too :)

    Have a wonderful day, T. :)

  2. I love blogs and I love blogging most of the time but there are times when I feel I have nothing interesting to say. Like you, though I don't think I would stop- I just hope my readers will bear with my babbling!

  3. I recently went a couple weeks without blogging after two months of overtime at my day job. Neglecting the blog was guilt-inducing, but total burnout had set in. It's good to be back in the swing of things.

Some of my favorite bloggers have stopped writing. It's like losing a friend.

  4. I have a hard time with blogging just because I don't think anyone wants to read about my everyday stuff and It's hard to come up with something to say sometimes but, I do like blogging so I'm going to follow your lead MAB and do a little babbling. After all, I love to read the babbles of other bloggers!

  5. Wow, MAB, your post fits me perfectly (change cats to alpacas!) I feel sad when a blog dies - like a friendship fading away.
I like your variety, your silly posts and the cats! Don't let your blog end up in the 1/3 that go away!
